Google Chromium OS is available as source code, which you can download and compile by yourself to create an image file compatible with any virtual machine solution, such as VMware or VirtualBox. It’s based on Linux, starts up in seconds and is mainly designed for the Web.

This is exactly the most outstanding feature in Google Chromium OS. In Google Chromium OS everything is web-based, or if you prefer it, in “the Cloud”. It is meant to be used with online web application and you will store all your files online. That’s what makes it so fast and lightweight: the OS doesn’t need to install anything on your computer, because you can access everything online.

This is the perfect Operating System for low-spec computers like notebooks. After logging in with your Gmail account, you are ready to start. Google Chromium OS may look a bit peculiar at first, but it’s also very intuitive. Peculiar because it’s completely different from any OS you may have tried so far – it’s just a web browser –, and intuitive because a web browser is where we spend most of the time on any other OS, so there’s no learning curve at all.

Google Chromium OS is certainly a revolutionary operating system that challenges us users to change our image of computers, and the way we’ve been using them so far.

The Wikimedia Foundation has achieved its goal of raising over $6 million (in U.S. dollars) to sustain Wikipedia. As of Jan. 2, the campaign had generated just over $6.2 million from 125,000 donors from around the world.

The San Francisco-based company said funds will be used to maintain and grow the Foundation’s technical infrastructure, which includes managing global traffic for Wikipedia.

A personal appeal from founder Jimmy Wales, published on the Wikimedia Foundation’s website on Dec. 23, 2008, resulted in a surge of more than 50,000 contributions in eight days, totaling $2 million and closing the gap towards the revenue goal.

In an e-mail to ChannelWeb.com, Beltzner outlined some of the important features that come with Beta 2 and the reasons for releasing Firefox 3.1 Beta 3.

“Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 includes some big changes (Web worker threads, Private Browsing Mode and Tracemonkey) and it was felt that another public consultation point would be needed before we were ready to move to release candidates,” Beltzner wrote.

This is something I found on the web and maybe useful to all flash developers.

- Malicious code: Code in lots of items such as buttons, movieclips, etc. It takes a long time to see all the code. It should be nested in classes or just in some frames as much, but I find files with code in more than 50 places.

- Using variables instead of arrays. They usually use “Eval” instead of “for in”. Using a lot of boolean variables.

- Bad terminology: Something like this: mc_car instead of car_mc. Same for buttons.

- Thousands of movieclips and items in the library instead of using dynamic creation of them.

- Library Chaos: It is not so difficult to make folders: img/sound/mc/buttons

- Excesive use of timeline instead of code. One frame is enough, a bit more depending on your preload (if it´s AS2)

- No version control. So you find files names like: car_definitive.fla, car_definitive2.fla, etc.

- Magic numbers instead of using constants or stage proportions

- Code not tabbed.

- Unnecessary spaces in the code.

- No documentation or no comments at all in the code.
