Yahoo’s new homepage design: What do you think?

Yahoo has a new homepage now and they claim to have changed quite a lot of elements in this new design. The new homepage is much shorter in length and cleaner. All personalized yahoo apps like mail, weather, movies are now made prominent. They are moved to the left nav and when clicked a layer opens (left nav expands) with more information. Notice that the logo has a new purple color instead of red. The white background of the page is now replaced by a gradient of gray. Lot of content that existed on the old homepage like Marketplace, Today’s top searches etc are now removed. See the couple of screenshots and let us know your comments.

Note: Not everyone can view this new this page. For some reason it only shows randomly. Not sure why.

Giving a facelift to old sites

Most Design companies and designers jump with joy at an opportunity to redesign an existing site. It may make business sense to the design company, but we need to see what is best for the customer. Redoing an existing site is a big task and needs a solid rationale. One should not be just throwing money to create something new. We have learnt over the past few years what works and what doesn’t and we advise clients accordingly if they need a site facelift or continue with the existing site. Here are some tips to consider before doing a facelift.

  • Make sure that you do a thorough analysis of your site traffic and see how it is doing. It would help you identify if your site architecture is robust and that you do not need to redo the architecture.
  • Find out if you had done Search Engine Optimization on your site. Probably due to less traffic you are considering a new site. However your solution maybe simply to invest in SEO work.
  • Talk to people who are using your site and find out what they think. Find out what information they are seeking and if you already have that information on your site.
  • Review latest technologies and features you can incorporate in a new site. We have a long array of web 2.0 features, cool flash animations, and applications, streaming media, accessibility features etc that can really give a facelift to your website.
  • See if you have processes, products, paperwork, forms within your business that you can put online and automate the process. Online presence is beneficial not only to have your company brochure in a digital format but also to expand the sales and customer service processes,
  • Determine what your goals with the new site are and reevaluate your goals with your existing site. Try and understand what is working and what needs improvement. Sometimes making a new site is not a solution. You may probably need minor adjustments or expansion of the current website.
Old and new website comparision

Old and new website comparision

A good example of redesign is http://www.barackobama.com. According to me it is one of the best website designs we have today. It is also a success story how this website helped Obama succeed in his mission to get elected as the President of USA. The website also helped him raise millions of dollars for his campaign. There is a sea change in the old and the new website and this maybe the best example today for people looking for a redesign of their website.

BTW Congrats ‘President-elect’ Obama.

Our Team Blog

We at Epsilonium have worked with blogs for a long time, even longer than when blogs became hip. We developed blogging applications from scratch and also customized off-the-shelf ones like MovableType. Ironically enough, while we talked a lot about blogging within our team, we never got around to having one for us…well not until just now. So here it is, our Team Blog containing pearls, sapphires and diamonds of e-business we have harvested over the last 8 years. Keep checking back as we showcase them for you.
